What the format covers

  • Three readings per wall

Record each wall length at floor level, about a metre up and at the ceiling to catch walls that are out of square.

  • Room-by-room rows

Each room has its own rows, so nothing is measured once and assumed for the rest.

  • Notes column

Write down what the numbers do not show, such as a beam, a slope or an uneven floor.

  • Photo check

Mark whether you photographed each item, so gaps are visible before you leave the site.

How to use the sheet on site

Print it or open it on a tablet. Measure each item three times and write all three readings down; do not average them on site.

  • Use the smallest reading for built-in furniture, so the unit fits at the tightest point.
  • Note the unit once, and use the same unit throughout the sheet.
  • Photograph each wall and mark the column when done.
  • Check the sheet for blank cells before you leave.

Common questions

Why take three readings of each wall?

Walls are often not square or plumb. Readings at different heights show how much a wall varies, which decides how much room to leave for fitting a built-in unit.

Which unit should I use?

Use whichever your team and suppliers use, and write it down. Feet-inches and millimetres both work as long as the sheet is consistent.

When should measurements be taken for a modular kitchen?

Take final measurements after civil work, plumbing points and tiling are done, since earlier readings often change.
